Why am I being asked to sign in again?

Use the same browser profile for the website and extension. Make sure the sign-in finished successfully and that your browser does not clear Footnote cookies when it closes. Private browsing and separate profiles have separate sessions.

Version 0.5.10 renews the session during use, up to 180 days of inactivity. The backend update must also be deployed for persistence across server restarts. A deployment migrating from older temporary sessions may require one fresh sign-in.

If the account service is temporarily unreachable, retry after it recovers. A connectivity error is not proof that your saved login has expired.

Does the website need to stay open?

No. Once you are signed in, the extension sends checks directly to Footnote's backend and displays results over the page. Return to the website to sign in or manage payment.

A check is taking longer than expected

Source searches and page fetches can take time. The panel reports progress while it waits for a completed result. If it times out, use the recovery action shown. An optional deeper search is a separate, explicitly requested search.

Do not interpret a fast or slow response as a measure of accuracy. Read the source evidence after the result arrives.

Footnote asks me to select a passage

A long article, feed, or document can contain more claims than one check covers. Highlight the relevant sentence or short passage. If you choose to check the captured excerpt, the result applies to that captured portion.

What happens with PDFs, video, and images?

For a PDF, scroll the relevant passage into view. The extension may need a screenshot because text inside the browser PDF viewer is not directly available. Video checks use the available title, description, and opened transcript; they do not establish that the entire video was reviewed.

Screenshots are used when the pixels contain information the text cannot provide. Restricted browser pages and the extension store cannot be checked like ordinary web pages.

How do I enable the optional vvv trigger?

Open the extension settings and enable Type vvv. The browser requests access across websites for this feature. It is off by default and ignores inputs and text editors. The toolbar, context menu, and shortcut remain alternatives.
